Awareness
Just like riding in the arena with others, riders must be aware of what is around them.
Things to be aware of:
Look all round for traffic β be aware what is behind, in front and approaching from the side at all times
Weather conditions – Visibility β can you see traffic, can they see you?
Be alert for possible hazards e.g. trucks using air brakes
Slippery conditions: ice, sealed roads on a slope, slippery cement finishes on some driveways
And some more..
Grit and dirt provide better footing for hooves
Painted lines on roads may startle a horse
Daylight β will you be home before itβs dark?
Courtesy:
It is very important to show courtesy and consideration to all other road users. It promotes good road courtesy by the drivers too!
Have you thought about…
Always walk the horse when passing pedestrians, most people are frightened or at least quite wary of meeting a horse “outside of the paddock”
A friendly greeting from the rider may reassure walkers and cyclists too!
Smile, nod, say thank-you to acknowledge considerate drivers. Waving may also be suitable but remember you may have less control whilst riding with only one hand…..
Give way to vehicles when safe and appropriate.
Try not to dawdle in front of cars, pull off the road if necessary
