Riding Tests
This is a riding test you can undertake as part of a Pony Club lesson, with your coach or just to practice for yourself! Download the sample riding test route below, print it out and combine with these suggestions:
1.Walk the route unmounted: Set up a simulated route using jump poles, spray paint, white tape etc in the Arena or grassed area-
ensure gates are closed.
2.Demonstrate observe, signal, observe: With riders unmounted, walk the route they are expected to ride
3.One rider at a time: Use observation techniques and hand signals whilst walking the route
4.Feedback: Ask for a volunteer to demonstrate riding the route
5.Discuss with riders the emergency dismount, provide a demonstration
6.Emergency dismount: Make the emergency dismount into a fun timed game. Sitting with both feet in the stirrups (start the clock). Stop the clock when the rider has dismounted, stood on the offside with the reins placed correctly in the hands
8.Mount from the off-side:Again with fun in mind – time the riders mounting from the offside
