What do I wear?

The Rider

Riders will often think first – what should I wear today? Sunnies, vest top, my new purple joddies – well – I gotta look sharp!

Austrailan Standards approved safety helmet, fastened securely. The Equestrian Australia website (and search for “Safety”) has information on Australian Standards for horse riding helmets and how to care for them.

Jodhpur/horse riding boots (sand shoes, gum boots are dangerous).

Light-coloured/bright clothing (ideally a reflective/fluorescent vest)

Light coloured riding gloves (hand-signals may be more visible)

Experienced riders should always carry a whip (longer whip helps to keeps quarters in)

The Horse

Always – a saddle and bridle. Ensure the gear fits well and is in good condition (do a gear check on yourself before riding out)

When leading a horse on the road either mounted or unmounted, the led horse should always wear a bridle or anti-rearing bit.

Never ride with stirrup bars in the “up” or “locked” position (this is where the stirrup leathers join to the saddle)

Ensure stirrup irons are not too large or too small. Both are dangerous! There are a number of safety stirrup designs or attachments now on the market. Consider investing in a stirrup related safety product that suits you.

Something reflective (leg bands, tail guard, bridle straps, hindquarter rug).

Question?: Do you know difference between ‘reflective’ and ‘fluorescent’

You will find the answer written in the Horse Riding & Road Safety Booklet
